Abstract
Edward¡¯s syndrome (ES, trisomy 18) is a congenital chromosomal disorder that presents with an extra chromosome 18. The most common characteristics of this disorder are mental and growth retardation, congenital heart disease, craniofacial features (such as a prominent occiput, microcephaly, micrognathia, and low-set and malformed ears), clenched fists with overlapping fingers, finger flexion, and rocker-bottom feet. The dental characteristic of ES includes cleft lip/palate, high and narrow palate, anterior open bite, and vertical facial growth. Herein, we have described the dental treatment provided to a 4-year-old girl with ES.
The patient had visited the Seoul National University Dental Hospital with multiple caries in the primary teeth. The provision of dental care for patients with ES is generally complicated owing to factors such as poor cooperation, congenital cardiac abnormalities, and difficulty in maintaining the airway due to the presence of facial malformations. In this study, dental treatment was successfully performed under general anesthesia. Dental professionals need to be familiar with the clinical features of ES and provide continuous preventive therapies for these patients.
